NEW ORLEANS - Nearly 70 years ago "at a neatly arranged and deliciously prepared lawn supper," wrote the campus newspaper, Xavier University of Louisiana paid tribute to its own Jimmie McDaniel. He was well on his way to establishing himself as the greatest black player of the pre-war (World War II) era, which is what the United States Tennis Association calls McDaniel on its Web site.

Hattiesburg, Miss. - The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference announced today that Voorhees College has decided not to accept an invitation to join the conference.  The conference had announced in March the addition of Voorhees, Fisk University and Edward Waters College.  Further expansion of the GCAC remains one of the conference's most important goals.
