NEW ORLEANS, La. - Southern University at New Orleans won consecutive games for the first time this season and pushed its record to 3-2 with a tough 70-63 victory over the Loyola University Lady Wolfpack at The Den. The Lady Knights applied suffocating defensive pressure and followed the lead of Brandy Broome who had 21 points, 15 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals on the way to the win.
"There was no way we were going to lose this game tonight", said Broome who played all 40 minutes. "So whatever I had to do, whether it was scoring, rebounding or being aggressive on defense, then that's what I had to do. My teammates and I put everything out on the floor and we were able to come out of here with the win."
NASHVILLE- The Fisk Lady Bulldogs (5-4) will be going for the seson split today as they take on the Martin Methodist (TN.) Lady Redhawks (9-2) at the Henderson A Johnson Arena (HAJ). The Lady Redhawks defeated Fisk 68-55 on November 19th at Pulaski. Martin outrebounded the Lady Bulldogs 63-29 Nina Mills and Kyra Knight both earned double-doubles in the game for the Redwawks. Down 40-18, the Lady Bulldogs were able to cut the lead to eight but couldn't get any closer. Stevonna Scott led Fisk in scoring with 27 points.
"We came out flat down there and couldn't get over the hump," said Fisk head coach Tony Thompson. "They murdered us on the boards. It is tough enough playing that good of a team at their place. To get outrebounded like that didn't help our cause. We will have to rebound much better to beat them."
This will be the last game in 2013 for Fisk. They won't be back in action until January 2, 2014 against Purdue Calumet (IN). They are looking forward to leaving it on the floor today and getting some rest before the conference season starts on January 3rd.
"I am ready to play this one," said NAIA leading scorer Stevonna Scott. "We owe them for beating us at their place. I missed too many shots in that game. They play real good at home but so do we. We are known to start out slow. We can't do that today. They burned us early last time."
Game time is 2 pm.
(New Orleans) The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics announced its 2012-13 NAIA Champions of Character Five-Star Award winners, and Dillard University made the prestigious list for the fourth consecutive year. Dillard has achieved this particular NAIA award every year since the existence of the Champions of Character scorecard.
DALLAS, Tx. - Southern University at New Orleans got its record back to .500 (2-2) by defeating the Lady Tigers of Paul Quinn College. The Lady Knights jumped out to a 47-10 halftime lead before sitting the team's starters for most of the second half and coasting to a 47-point victory. With four games remaining before Christmas holidays, SUNO finds itself in the position to gain some momentum before conference play begins.
"You really start to learn about your team from how they play on the road", said Head Coach Elston King. "It's us versus them with no friends and fans around to back you up, so you have to rely on each other. They came out with a lot of intensity and played great defense in the first half. The best thing about that is we got our starters some rest, our reserves got to play and we should be ready for the quick turnaround when we take on Loyola on Friday night."
