(New Orleans, La.) The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced that 1,290 athletic programs, including the Bleu Devils and Lady Bleu Devils basketball teams of Dillard University, have been named 2013-14 NAIA Scholar-Teams.
Voorhees College has recently hired Derrick Mitchell as the new head men's basketball coach.
Prior to coming to Voorhees, Mitchell served as assistant coach of the women's basketball team at Division II Southern Arkansas University. While at Southern Arkansas University (SAU), he assisted the team in reaching the conference tournament for the first time since 2006-2007 season. Just a year removed from a 0-25 season, with Mitchell's assistance, the team won more games (12) than the previous three seasons combined.
NEW ORLEANS, LA - Kendal Smith was an All-Conference and All-American performer during his time as a member of the Xavier Gold Rush. Following his outstanding playing career, Smith went on to serve as an assistant coach on the men's basketball team at his alma mater and today continues to serve his beloved Xavier as a building manager.
Though he no longer plays competitively, basketball is still a big part of his life. For the past few years, Smith, along with former University of Oklahoma star Quannas White, has headed up the Louisiana Dynasty. Since 2009 the Dynasty has sent more than 20 young people off to college to continue to pursue their athletic and academic dreams.
(New Orleans, La.) The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference announced that Kiki Baker Barnes is the 2013-14 GCAC Athletics Director of the Year. Barnes recently completed her eighth year in the position at Dillard University, and she also serves as GCAC President. She first won the award back in 2010-11.
