NEW ORLEANS - Nearly 70 years ago "at a neatly arranged and deliciously prepared lawn supper," wrote the campus newspaper, Xavier University of Louisiana paid tribute to its own Jimmie McDaniel. He was well on his way to establishing himself as the greatest black player of the pre-war (World War II) era, which is what the United States Tennis Association calls McDaniel on its Web site.

NEW ORLEANS - Xavier University of Louisiana's revival of women's volleyball in 2010 includes a schedule of more than 30 regular-season matches.
First-year Coach Al'lisa Hale announced the schedule Friday. This will be Xavier's third season of intercollegiate volleyball but the first since 2004.
The Gold Nuggets will begin their regular season Aug. 28 when they play host to Alabama State and Belhaven at The Barn. Belhaven will be Xavier's opening opponent at 3 p.m., and the Nuggets will play Alabama State at 7 p.m. Sandwiched between those matches will be an Alabama State-Belhaven contest at 5:30 p.m.

Hattiesburg, Miss. - The newly created GCAC Council of Presidents will hold its first meeting by teleconference on August 23. The meeting is expected to result in a substantial revision of the GCAC Constitution and Bylaws to place the conference in compliance with changes in NAIA requirements for affiliated conferences. The regular fall meeting of the GCAC will be held at Tougaloo College on August 29-30.

Hattiesburg, Miss. - The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference announced today that
Voorhees College has decided not to accept an invitation to join the
conference. The conference had announced in March the addition of
Voorhees, Fisk University and Edward Waters College. Further expansion
of the GCAC remains one of the conference's most important goals.
