The 13th-ranked University of Mobile softball team finished a productive trip to California by splitting a double header with 2nd-ranked California Baptist.

The double header featured two very different games, with the Lancers taking a pitcher’s duel 1-0 in the opener, and then the Lady Rams bouncing back by taking an 8-7 slugfest.

The Lancer’s Amy Thomas and Mobile’s Karla Rodriguez matched each other pitch for pitch through 5 shutout innings, before Cal Baptist used a leadoff walk in the 6th to push home a run with a RBI single from Kelly Maconachy.

Thomas went the distance, fanning 3 and limiting Mobile to 4 hits to pick up the win for the Lancers, while Rodriguez was charged with the loss despite going 6 innings, fanning a pair and limiting Cal Baptist to 5 hits.

In the finale, Mobile pounded out 13 hits and got 3 long balls. A pair of 2-run homers from Jineth Pimentel and Anadys Suarez in the 2nd and 3rd innings helped stake Mobile to a 5-2 lead, and then Yaicey Sojo produced the game-winner in the 6th with a solo shot.

Cal Baptist put up 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th and chased two Mobile pitchers before Nikki Madden came in to leave the bases loaded with a big strikeout and then work a perfect 7th for the save.

Sojo finished 3-for-4 with a homer, Pimentel finished 2-for-3 with a 2-run homer, Jennifer Gomez finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, Kelyn Mendoza finished 3-for-4, and Suarez finished 1-for-4 with a 2-run homer.

Mobile improves to 8-2 on the season and next plays March 11th at home against LSU-Alexandria. The double header starts at 2:00. Cal Baptist falls to 18-2.
