HATTIESBURG, MS- William Carey University advanced to the semifinals of the Gulf Athletic
ConferenceTournament by knocking off LSU-Shreveport, 76-71.
LSU-Shreveport opened the game scoring the first four points but Carey answered with a12-1 run to take a lead they would never relinquish. Carey shot a blistering 56% from thefloor in the first half as Carey opened a 36-22 halftime lead.
In the second half the Lady Pilots refused to go quietly and a steady offensive assault sawLSUS cut the lead to 60-59 on a lay-up by Edie Leonards with 4:24 to play. Carey regrouped
and did their damage at the free throw line in the final four minutes. Carey connected on
14 of 16 free throws in the final four minutes as they kept the Lady Pilots at bay.
Fallon Hartfield led Carey with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Taphne Jackson added 18 points and Shonte Kennedy chipped in with 16 points. Edie Leonards led all scores with 24 points and 12 rebounds. With the win Carey advances to the semi-finals of the GCAC playoffs as they take on #15 Loyola University. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm at the Den.
