JACKSON, MS- William Carey University improved to 14-1 on the season taking three games on Saturday in the weather shortened Belhaven Tournament.

Carey was originally scheduled to play in four games this weekend in the tourney, but Friday afternoon’s games were suspended due to the wintry weather that struck the state.

With some reshuffling Carey took part in the three games on Saturday.

In game one against Northwood University, Carey starter Brittany Ladner (6-1) was outstanding as she allowed only three hits and no runs and the Carey offense totaled nine runs with eight runs coming off homeruns as the Lady Crusaders won in five innings.

Carey struck the first runs in the third inning as Pam Martin hit a sacrifice fly to score Jeanna Erickson. Shana Gunter followed with a monster two run homerun to put Carey up 3-0.

The Lady Crusader’s used the long ball again in the third inning as Shelly Berry smacked a three run homerun to increase the lead to 6-0.

Carey finished off the scoring with the long ball as Leah Kilpatrick belted a three run homer in the fourth as Carey cruised to a 9-0 win.

In game two, Carey held a 2-1 lead over St. Ambrose (IA) heading into the third inning and then exploded for six runs thanks in part to five St. Ambrose errors to take command.

Katie McCrary picked up the win as she improved to 3-0 on the season. Bree Neidhardt and Jill Wedgeworth each collected two hits and scored two runs.

By game three the Carey offense was in full swing and they exploded for 10 runs in the top of the first inning against Lyon College (AR). Carey added three more runs in the third and fourth innings on their way to a 16-1 romp.

The Carey offense pounded out 23 hits as eight Lady Crusaders collected two or more hits. Shana Gunter went four for four with four RBI’s to lead the Lady Crusaders. Jeana Erickson and Megan Pittman drove in three run’s apiece. Brittany Ladner picked up her seventh win of the season.

Carey returns to action on Thursday as they travel to Marion, AL, to take on Judson College. Carey the heads to Orange Beach, AL, to take part in the Orange Beach Tournament over the weekend.
