For the most part a classic pichers duel took place between William Carey’s Matt Rozier and Kansas Wesleyan’s Brandon Mathes. Rozier was rock solid for the Crusaders as he allowed only six hits and two runs in seven innings of work but Mathes was every bit his equal. Mathes worked a no hitter for 6 1/3 innings until Greg Alexander singled to break up the no hit effort.
Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Alexander’s single help start the Carey comeback. Alexander would eventually score in the inning thanks to a productive RBI out by Louis Rolon.
In the eighth, with the bases loaded and two outs, Mathes made perhaps his only mistake of the day by throwing a wild pitch which allowed Pat Barnes to race home to tie the game 2-2.
Matt Carter worked a no hit eighth and ninth for the Crusaders to set the stage for Barnes. It all started for the Crusaders in the ninth as Will Dannelly drew a key one out walk off reliever Brian Dobyns. After another Carey out, the stage was set for Barnes who ripped a double to left center that scored Dannelly all the way from first to propel Carey to a 3-2 victory.
Carter picked up the win for the Crusaders and improves to 3-1 on the season.
Carey improves 22-10 on the season and returns to action on Friday as they travel to Jackson, MS to take on GCAC foe Tougaloo College .
