Hattiesburg, MS- One day after achieving the highest ranking in school history the William Carey Lady Crusaders showed why they are the 12th ranked team in the country as they swept Gulf Coast Athletic Conference foe and currently #4 University of Mobile Lady Rams, 3-2 (8) and 5-2 Thursday afternoon at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field.

Carey moved up one spot to 12th in the recent NAIA polls while Mobile moved up two spots to 4th and received a first place vote. But that did not deter the Lady Crusaders who were out to show why they are deserving of their national ranking and Tan Montgomery’s RBI single in the second opened the scoring for the Lady Crusaders in game one as Carey went up 1-0.

Mobile tied things in the sixth as they took advantage of a Carey error. Neither team mounted a threat in the seventh as the game headed to extra innings. Mobile’s Jennifer Gomez’s sac fly in the eighth scored Jessica McIntyre to give the Lady Rams a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom half of the eighth Carey tied things with a sac fly from Jill Wedgeworth that scored Bree Neidhart. Then Jeanna Erickson stepped in and smashed a solo homerun to left center field to give the Lady Crusaders the win.

Devin King picked up her third win of the season going eight innings and allowing seven hits and two runs.

In game two it was Erickson who got things started with an RBI single in the top of the third then King followed and  broke things wide open for the Lady Crusaders  with a two RBI double to put Carey up 3-0.

Carey added another run in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead but in the top half of the fifth Mobile led off the inning with two singles and a double to cut the lead to 4-1 with two on and no out. Brittany Fuller came on in relief of starter Brittany Ladner and struck out the first two batters she faced and got the third to pop up to get out of the jam.

Fuller was strong down the stretch for the Lady Crusaders allowing only two hits and one run as she picked up her third save of the season.

With the sweep of the Lady Rams, Carey improves to 24-5 and 3-1 in GCAC play. Mobile falls to 17-5 and 0-2 in GCAC play.

Carey returns to action tomorrow at home as they take on Culver Stockton College. First pitch is set for 2:00 pm at Joseph and Nancy Fail Field.
