Hattiesburg, MS- William Carey University finished off a four game series sweep of the visiting Badgers of Spring Hill College taking today's games 5-4 and 15-5 at Milton Wheeler Field.
Carey and Spring Hill played a wild first inning in game one. The Badgers knocked around Carey starter Matt Carter scoring three runs on three hits and two walks. Carey answered with a little help from the Badgers in the bottom half of the first scoring three runs on three hits and two errors.
The Badgers would recapture the lead in the third thanks to lead off singles by Tyler Moberg and Brad Holstein. Sam Stewart followed with a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over then a pass ball by the Crusaders allowed Moberg to score from third to put the Badgers up 4-3. Things might have been worse for the Crusaders because two more walks by Carter loaded the bases with only one out but a sensational double play by third baseman Brandon Chretien ended the inning.
Carey evened the game with a sac fly from Pat Barnes that allowed Jordan Prout to score in the fourth inning. Barnes would eventually knock in the go ahead run in the sixth inning with a double to left field that would score Michael Lewis and put Carey up 5-4.
Michael Lewis led Carey at the plate going 3 for 3. Josh Toxclair worked four innings in relief allowing only one hit to pick up his third win of the season.
In game two both teams traded runs early and after four innings the game was tied 5-5. It stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh when Carey broke things wide open. Carey scored eight runs thanks to 2 RBI singles by Louis Rolon and Pat Barnes as well as a two RBI double by Lance Brewer.
Carey then ended the game in dramatic fashion in the eighth with a massive 2 run homerun by Leon Farmer.
Jordan Prout led Carey in game two going 3 for 3 with a double, homer run, and four RBI. Greg Alexander picked up four hits and scored three runs as well.
Kyle Boswell picked up his third win of the season working 1 1/3 inning in relief.
Carey returns to action next week as they travel to Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL, to take part in the 2008 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. Tournament bracket will be released on Sunday.
