Orange Beach, AL- #11 William Carey University opened the 2008 NAIA Region XIII Tournament by defeating Belhaven College in game one before falling to #7 Shorter College 2-0 in game two.
In game one Carey jumped on the Lady Blazers in the bottom of the first as Jill Wedgeworth smacked a two RBI double to left to put the Lady Crusaders up 2-0. Carey added to the lead before the inning was over as Jeana Erickson's sacrifice fly scored Wedgeworth to put Carey up 3-0.
Belhaven rallied with two runs in the second and one in the fifth to tie the game 3-3. Then Carey bats came back alive in the bottom of the fifth as Leah Kilpatrick doubled only to be followed by another RBI double from Wedgeworth to put Carey up 4-3.
Starter Devin King slammed the door on the Lady Blazers working an efficient sixth and seventh innings to pick-up the win.
Game two against #7 Shorter was all a classic pitching duel as Shorter's Libby Munson and Carey's Brittany Ladner dueled it out. Both pitchers were rock solid but it was the Lady Hawks Munson who got the better of Ladner and Lady Crusaders.
Munson pitched a complete game one hitter recording seven strikeouts and no walks. Ladner was solid allowing five hits and recording five strikeouts but gave up two runs.
Shelly Berry picked up the lone hit for the Lady Crusaders with a single in the seventh.
"We came out strong but went a little flat in the middle of the Belhaven game but rallied and played well the rest of the day. Hat's off to Munson, she was outstanding," said Carey Coach Wendy Hogue. "We hit the ball well today and King and Ladner were both outstanding, I feel real good about our team and the way we are playing."
