New Orleans, La.- Former Loyola baseball player Brian Mason signed today with the Reno Silver Sox of the Golden Baseball League.

Mason completed his Loyola career with a program record 240 hits. He maintained a .417 batting average with four home runs, 44 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 2008. He was an All-GCAC selection and a three time Daktronics NAIA Scholar Athlete.

In the "new era" of Loyola athletics, Mason ranks second in career batting average (.345) and runs scored (150) and fifth in RBI (114). He also is second in Loyola single season batting average (.417).

Mason is the third player to play professional baseball since Loyola brought the sport back in 1991. David Lindsey was selected in the 19th round in 2000 by the St. Louis Cardinals and played in their minor league system. Trey Fury signed a contract and played one season for the Dortmund Wanderers of the German National Premier League in 2006.

The Silver Sox are managed by former major leaguer Jeffrey Leonard. Leonard played for five big league teams during his 14 year career. Most notably, he was awarded the MVP in the 1987 National League Championship Series with the San Francisco Giants. He was named to the National League All-Star team with the Giants in 1987 and the American League All-Star team in 1989 with the Seattle Mariners.

The Golden Baseball League is a professional baseball league with teams in California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and western Canada. The league has featured baseball greats Rickey Henderson and Jose Canseco over the past three seasons, plus over 40 other ex-major league players along with many with top minor league, foreign professional, and college experience. Over one million fans have attended GBL games over the past three seasons.

Comment from Coach Gee Cassard: "We're thrilled that Brian has an opportunity to continue his baseball career and play as a professional. He had an outstanding career at Loyola both on the field and in the classroom. I know that our players and coaches will be following his new career and wish him the best of luck."
