Blue Mountain, MS- William Carey University opened their 2008-09 season in style as they routed the Toppers of Blue Mountain College on Saturday night, 103-72.
Both teams traded baskets in the games opening eight minutes until pre-season All-GCAC selection Dexter Middleton's thunderous slam dunk sparked a 19-3 Crusader run which helped propel Carey to a 60-37 lead. The Crusaders used a suffocating full court press to force seventeen first half turnovers which led to Carey shooting a blistering 65.7% (25-38) in the half.
The Toppers cut the Carey lead to a 60-46 at the start of the second but the Crusaders regrouped to run away with 103-72 victory.
Middleton led the Crusaders with a game high 25 points. Paul Lubin added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Terry Wade finished with 11 points while Johnny Lockhart and Johnathan Woodland each chipped in with 10 points.
The Crusaders return to action at home on Tuesday as the take on Lambuth University.
Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm at Clinton Gym.
