MONTGOMERY, Ala- Second-half free throw shooting doomed the University of Mobile men's basketball team to its first loss of the season Monday at 14th-ranked Auburn-Montgomery. The Senators took the game 69-67.
Mobile knocked down 13-of-14 from the charity stripe in the opening half and Derrell Moreaux scored 10 points over the final 5:33 that keyed a 18-4 Mobile run that sent the team into the half with a 43-31 edge.
But, it was AUM with the edge at the charity stripe in the final half, as the home team knocked down 21-of-25 freebies compared to only 3-of-10 from Mobile.
Despite that, the Rams still led 67-62 with 1:43 left in the game on a 3-point play from Moreaux. But, AUM closed out the game with a 7-0 run, taking the lead for good with 27 seconds remaining when Kip Small hit a pair of free throws to put the Senators up 68-67.
Kip Small hit 13-of-15 free throws for the Senators to finish with 23 points, while Robert Golston and Derrell Moreaux led Mobile with 17 points apiece. It's Golston's third-straight game in double figures and second straight to lead the Rams in scoring. Mobile (2-1) next plays at home Saturday, Dec. 6 at 7 pm when Concordia-Selma visits.
