Jackson, Tenn.- In a battle of two top 25 teams in the NAIA, #1 Union defeated #24 Loyola 103-54 in the opening game of the Rotary Classic played on the campus of Union University in the Fred Delay Gymnasium.  

 

The Smith twins led the way for the Wolfpack scoring a combined 35 points. Trenese Smith finished with 19 on 6 of 15 shooting from the field. The junior from LaPlace grabbed five rebounds on the evening. Trenell Smith scored 16 points and shot a perfect 7 of 7 from the free throw line. Christine Mainguy led on the boards with 11 rebounds. It was the regular season opener for Loyola (0-1).

 

Union (7-0) had seven players in double figures with Josephine Owino leading with 23 points. Owino missed only one field goal attempt in the game, shooting 11 of 12 from the field. Merideth Jacobs finished with 18 points. Ashley Lillard had a double double with 14 points and a game high 14 rebounds. Other leaders for the Bulldogs included Kayla Hudson and Lavanda Ross- each had 12 points. Kaitlin Dudley added 11 points, and Zeinab Chan had 10 points.

 

The Bulldogs enjoyed a considerable shooting advantage in the contest. Union converted 62.1% of their shots from the field, while holding the Wolfpack to a 32.8% clip. Union hit 7 of 22 from behind the arc. Loyola made only 2 of 17 attempts from distance on the evening. The Wolfpack made 12 of 14 from the free throw line.

 

Union led 44-17 at the break and outscored Loyola 59-37 in the second half. The Bulldogs forced 28 Wolfpack turnovers in the game.

 

The Rotary Classic continues on Friday as Loyola will face NAIA #9 Lambuth University with tip off scheduled for 5 p.m.
