Dillard (1-14, 4-19) started fast against SUNO (5-10, 10-13) in an intense battle. With both teams looking for respectable ends to their regular seasons, the Knights and the Bleu Devils played a game that, at times, went basket for basket. Dillard got off to a blazing 20-9 start over the Knights within the first 10 minutes of the game. With 7:13 left in the first half, SUNO slowed Dillard down enough to close the lead to 8 points at 26-18. By the time the first half was over, the Knights had shaven Dillard's lead to 31-29.
A determined SUNO team came back in the second half, taking the lead 43-42 within the first few minutes. Dillard reclaimed the lead only to see SUNO regain the lead 53-52 with just over 7 minutes left in the game. With 2:16 left, the Bleu Devils tied the game at 58, but poor ball handling sealed Dillard's fate with 1:30 left in the game. From there, the Knights turned a 1 point 59-58 lead into the final score.
Although Ricardo Porter led the Knights in scoring with 18 points, it was junior center Andre Davis's 17 points and 11 rebounds that proved to be a difference maker. Davis, who prepped at Benjamin Franklin in New Orleans, also registered 2 blocks on the night. Ronald Palmer and Lionel Green contributed 10 points, each, to the effort.
Dillard's James Burkes led the Bleu Devils in scoring with 19 points. Mico Sjekloca scored 13 points and led in rebounds with 8. Cornice Wingate led in steals with 3.
Saturday night is Senior Night for SUNO when they host William Carey.
