New Orleans, La. - It was Senior Night at Southern University at New Orleans and the senior Lady Knights went out with a 73-57 victory over William Carey in The Castle on Saturday night. Senior standout and pre-season All-GCAC selection Jazzlyn Prince once again proved to be a formidable force.
The Lady Knights (13-9, 7-9) managed to keep themselves in the middle of the GCAC pack in a game that began tightly. SUNO overcame poor shooting in the first half as the women managed only 30.8% from the field. The 19 turnovers committed by the Lady Crusaders (13-13, 9-7) meant defeat.
SUNO and Carey tied and traded baskets often throughout the first half until the Lady Knights ended the half with a 33-29 advantage. The second half, however, meant improved shooting and defense for SUNO as they pulled away to expand their lead to 14 points with 3:07 left in the game. Much to Carey's dismay, the team missed all five of the 3-pointers they took in the second half.
Prince led the way for the Lady Knights with a 17-point, 7-rebound and 3-steal performance. LaTiandra Smith also had 3 steals. Kiarra Sims had 13 points while both senior guard Jessica Adams and freshman guard Tyesha Robinson gave the Lady Knights 10 points, each. Senior forward Eugenia Leonard led SUNO in blocks with 3.
For William Carey, Consuela Tucker led with 14 points and Kim Lewis led with 9 rebounds. Lewis also had 12 points and 3 steals.
The Lady Knights will have a tough test when they visit Xavier on Thursday, February 25th.
