Jackson, MS-The Belhaven softball team wrapped up the Belhaven Elite
Tournament on Saturday with victories in both of their games. The
Blazers opened the day with a 9-6 win over Louisiana State University
at Alexandria and took game two from Christian Brothers University
11-2. The Blazers are now 17-1 on the season and 4-0 in the Gulf Coast
Athletic Conference after winning all four games this weekend.
Game One vs. LSU-Alexandria
LSU-Alexandria set the tone early in game one putting two runs on the
board in the bottom of the first inning. Belhaven answered with two
runs in the top of the second inning when Tiffany Ansley and Heather
Pace walked. Ansley came in on a sacrifice hit to left field and H.
Pace stole home.
Strong defense displayed from both teams did not allow any runs in the
third and fourth innings. Belhaven grabbed the lead in the top of the
fifth with four runs off of five hits. Webb led off with a triple and
was knocked in a triple by Christina Jaques. At that point, Ansley hit
a single to left field and came in on a single by Rian O'Bannon
followed by O'Bannon being knocked in on a single by Wright making the
score 6-2 in the top of the fifth. The Generals fought back with a run
in the bottom of the fifth with one hit.
Belhaven scored two runs in the top of the sixth with three hits and
one error. Webb came through for the Blazers again as she hit a single,
stole second, third, and home. Jessica Eggold scored an unearned due to
a throwing error by the pitcher. Belhaven also added one run in the top
of the seventh as O'Bannon scored on an error. LSU-Alexandria fought
back in the bottom of the seventh with three runs, one hit, and one
error. However, it was not enough as Belhaven picked up the win 9-6.
Webb, Jaques, O'Bannon, and Hess all had two hits to lead the Blazer
offense. Wright had 4 RBI's with O'Bannon and Jaques each being
credited with an RBI. Rebecca Rousseau pitched 5 innings and earned her
fifth win of the season to advance to 5-0 overall.
Game Two vs. Christian Brothers
Game two of the afternoon was all Belhaven as the Blazers nine run
ruled and dominated the Lady Bucs 11-2 in the sixth inning. Christian
Brothers were the first to put points on the board with two runs and
three hits in the top of the second. Nevertheless, the Blazers answered
back with two runs off of three hits as Webb hit a double allowing
Wright and O'Bannon to cross the home plate.
Belhaven added two more runs in the bottom of the third with four hits.
Jaques led off with a double, advanced to third, and advanced to home
on a wild pitch. In addition, Katie Sanders hit a single to left field
and advance Ansley home to make the score 4-2.
Christian Brothers were not able to do anything in the top of the
fourth due to the Blazers solid defense. Belhaven earned one run and
two hits in the bottom of the fourth as Jaques scored off of a double
by Ansley.
The fifth inning was no different for the Lady Bucs and the Blazers
took advantage as they added in three runs on three hits. Webb tripled
to center field knocking in Hess and Sanders. Jaques flied out to
center field allowing Webb to cross the plate. Belhaven also scored
three runs in the top of the sixth inning as Ansley scored off a single
by O'Bannon and B. Pace hit a single scoring O'Bannon and Megan Timbs.
These runs lead to the nine run rule and a final score of 11-2 in favor
of Belhaven in the top of the sixth.
Webb was the RBI leader with four and B. Pace contributed two RBI's
followed by Jaques, Ansley, O'Bannon, and Sanders who chipped in with
an RBI each. O' Bannon had three hits which was tops for the game.
Sarah Burns got the win as she worked all six innings boosting her
overall record to 8-1.
Offensively, Ansley leads the Blazers with a total of 29 RBI's on the
season followed by Webb with 26. Webb also has a total of 34 stolen
bases, nine doubles, and seven triples. Ansley has seven doubles and H.
Pace has six doubles.
Belhaven returns to action Tuesday evening as they head to Mobile, AL
for a double header with the University of Mobile in GCAC action. The
first pitch of game one is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
