Westwego, La. - The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team scored
seven runs in the fourth inning as they went on to defeat Blackburn
College 15-5 in seven innings at Segnette Field on Tuesday night.
Already up 7-0, Loyola (6-10) doubled their run total in the fourth, scoring all seven runs with two outs. Blackburn was able to score five in the fifth, but Loyola plated a run in their half of the inning to push the lead back to 15-5 and held the Beavers scoreless the rest of the way for the victory.
The Wolfpack were led by Caleb Templet who was 4 for 5 with two RBI. Brooks McMinn finished with three hits including a two-run home run in the third. Taylor Domengeaux, David McChesney, Ryan Scott, Chris May, and Slade Sanders chipped in with two hits each. McChesney also brought in three runs for the night.
Eric Walsh (1-0) picked up the win in relief. Starter Joey Pajares missed out on the decision after going 4.2 innings, giving up two earned runs on eight hits while fanning seven.
Blackburn (1-5) was led by Derek Bullias, Dan Witkus, and Cody Unser with two hits apiece. Bullias suffered the loss for the Beavers, giving up 14 runs on 16 hits in three-plus innings of action. He was also one of three players to pick up an RBI.
In the game, Loyola quickly took a two-run lead in the first on an error and a fielder's choice. In the second, after Scott brought a run in on a fielder's choice, Templet plated a run on an infield single then Tyler Duplantis hit a single to left to make the score 5-0 Loyola.
Following McMinn's second home run of the season in the third, Loyola's big inning started on an RBI sac fly by Bradley Brunet. The Wolfpack's next four runs came on a two-run triple by Sanders, a single by Domengeaux, and double by McChesney. Loyola capped off the inning with a pair of runs off singles from Scott and Templet.
For Blackburn, Nick Cronin brought in their first run in the fifth with a single followed by an RBI single by Bullias. After scoring two more on a Wolfpack error, Tim Rhodes added the last run with a base hit to left.
After Loyola loaded the bases in the fifth, McChesney drew a walk for the game's final run. Trey Campeaux pitched in the seventh and struck out two as Loyola won the series opener.
Loyola wraps up the series with Blackburn College on Wednesday at Segnette Field at 6 P.M.
