Birmingham, Ala. - Birmingham-Southern College used eleven two-run outs
to take the series opener 15-5 over the Loyola University New Orleans
baseball team on Tuesday night at historic Rickwood Field.
Loyola (9-16) only led once in the game, going up 1-0 in the first on an RBI single by Ryan Scott. Birmingham-Southern (20-4), ranked 20th in NCAA-III, came through with runs in five different innings with two outs, including a walk-off three run homer in the seventh by Bruce Maxwell.
Kevin Fonetnot, David McChesney, and Taylor Domengeaux led the Wolfpack with two hits each.
Carl Labit (1-2) was tagged with the loss, giving up three earned runs on six hits in 1.2 innings of work.
For Birmingham-Southern, Jessie Meir (4-1) got the win, throwing five innings, giving up three runs on five hits. In his final inning of work, Loyola scored two on a sac fly by Brooks McMinn and a RBI single by McChesney to make the score 8-3.
Maxwell paced the Panther offense, finishing with three hits and five RBI. Brandon Ricco, Brian Higginbotham, and Josh Whitaker chipped in with two hits apiece.
After Loyola scored first, Birmingham-Southern scored the next eight runs to lead 8-1 after the fourth. Loyola added a pair of runs in the fifth, then Domengeaux cut the deficit to 8-4 with an RBI single up the middle in the sixth.
The Panthers answered with four runs in their half of the frame, capped off by a 2-run double down the third baseline by Walker.
In the seventh, Caleb Templet got a run back for Loyola on a fielders choice before Maxwell ended the game with his three-run shot to left.
Loyola wraps up the road trip in Birmingham against the Panthers tomorrow at 3 P.M. The game will be held at Striplin Field on BSC's campus.
