Birmingham, Ala. - The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team was
held to five hits as #20 Birmingham-Southern College swept the two-game
series with a 7-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Striplin Field on
BSC’s campus.
Loyola (9-17) plated their only run in the third on a single by Bradley Brunet to make the score 3-1 Panthers. The Birmingham-Southern pitching shut out the Wolfpack the rest of the way, scattering three hits.
Kevin Fontenot led with two singles, while David McChesney and Brien Delahoussaye added a hit each. Fontenot, McChesney, and Ryan Scott drew two walks apiece.
George Smith (1-5) took the loss, giving up two earned on three hits in 0.2 innings of work.
Birmingham-Southern (21-4) was led by Bruce Maxwell, who hit a 2-run homer, and Jon Walker with two RBI.
Jordan Burchett (2-0) picked up the win, striking out six in 3.2 innings. He gave up a run on two hits.
The Panthers continued to hurt Loyola with two outs, scoring three in the second inning. After Loyola’s Brunet made the score 3-1, Birmingham-Southern added a run in the fourth on an error.
Maxwell’s second home run of the series in the fifth put the Panthers up 6-1, then Brandon Ricco brought in the game’s final run in the sixth with a single to left.
Loyola returns to action at Segnette Field with a GCAC matchup against the Mobile Rams. Friday night’s opener is set for 6 P.M.
