GULF SHORES, Ala-- The 20th-ranked University of Mobile softball team
split a pair of games on day one of the 2010 Gulf Coast Athletic
Conference Tournament at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex Thursday.
Mobile dropped the opener 3-1 to No. 16 William Carey, and then
rebounded to run-rule Dillard 8-0 in 6 innings to cap the day. The Lady
Rams (33-18, 11-5) battle Spring Hill College Friday at 10 am in an
elimination game.
Christie Soulis and Leslie Pickette combined for a no-hitter to beat
Dillard. Soulis got the win after fanning 6 in 3 innings, while Pickette
worked the final 3 innings for the save and struck out 5.
Desiree Truett finished 1-2 with 3 RBI, Nicole Walker went 2-3 with 2
RBI and Ally Scott finished 2-3 at the plate for Mobile.
A Dillard error put Mobile on the board first with a single tally in the
1st, and then the Lady Rams took control with a 4-run 2nd inning. In
that frame, Mobile had only two hits, but drew four walks. Holli McLeod
started the inning with a sac fly and Walker capped it with a 2-run
single.
Alyssa Boutwell got the win for William Carey in the opener after
throwing 4.2 innings of 1-run, 4-hit ball versus the Lady Rams. Anna Ard
worked 2.1 shutout innings in relief to get the save. Kamaron
Strickland took the loss for Mobile after giving up 3 runs on 6 hits in
2.2 innings of work.
Tan Montgomery, Casey Alexander and Judy Barber each went 2-4 to lead
William Carey. Kirstyn Joiner finished 1-2 with 1 RBI and 2 walks for
Mobile.
William Carey opened the game by scoring three runs in the 1st and held
on from there. Three straight singles started the frame and plated a
run, while Shanna Gunter capped the frame with a RBI-single.
The Lady Ram bats were silent early, but tried to rally late. In the
5th, Mobile tallied three hits and got on the board on Joiner's
bases-loaded walk, but the bases stayed loaded as 3rd-baseman Judy
Barber ended the frame with a leaping grab of Erica Bracey's line drive.
Mobile put two on with two outs in the 6th, but could not plate a run.
