Freshman outside hitter/defensive specialist Christal Kay Hollins attacks versus Alcorn State
Volleyball - Fri, Sep. 9, 2011
New Orleans, La. - SUNO rallied from a 1-0 deficit to defeat Alcorn State 3-1 in The Castle on Thursday night.  In front of a small but raucous crowd, the Lady Knights improved their 2011 record to 2-1 with the win.  SUNO's Sabrina Scott, a 6'4" middle blocker from Tacoma, Washington, was a major contributor with 19 kills and 5 digs on the evening.

The Lady Knights began the contest in a cloud of uncertainty, losing the first set 25-22; but the resilience that became their 2010 identity was revealed when they came from behind in the second set for a 25-20 win.  Where the Lady Knights displayed their best performance of the night was the third set, which they won convincingly 25-14.  In that set, SUNO had a team 41% attack efficiency.  Finally, SUNO put the match to bed with a 25-17 fourth set win.

Aside from Scott, two other Lady Knights had double-digit kills.  Christal Hollins contributed 15 kills to the effort along with her 2 aces and 8 digs.  Zipporah Washington had 11 kills to compliment her 2 aces and 10 digs.  Gabby Carter had her usual successful outing in assists with 42.  Great defense was provided by Trenice Smith and Shametria Gonzales, both of whom had a team-leading 12 digs, each.  Arrianne Gray had 2 aces and 3 solo blocks for SUNO.  The Lady Knights bettered the Lady Braves in team kills 53 to 30.

For Alcorn State, Alicia Tate, Shaquanda Hollis, and Stephenie Williams all had 5 kills, each.  Monique Ransom had 11 aces while Donna Kelly had a team-leading 12 digs.

SUNO will host Judson College in The Castle on Friday, September 9th at 5 p.m.
