Men's Basketball
Men's Basketball - Mon, Jan. 16, 2012

(New Orleans) Dillard won their first game of the season and Head Coach Bernard Griffith got his first victory as coach as the Bleu Devils upset Edward Waters College 64-62 before a packed and rowdy crowd on MLK Day on the Battlefield in Dent Hall.

The victory was sweet for the Bleu Devils, who had suffered several heartbreaking losses prior to defeating Edward Waters.

The Bleu Devils were able to put two halves of perfect, mistake-free basketball together to secure the victory. Edward Waters did everything they could to shake the pesky Bleu Devils, but were unable to.

Dillard trailed for majority of the first half, fighting to stay close to the Tigers. Trailing midway through the first half, Dillard went on an impressive 12-4 run to trail by only one point at halftime at 29-28. The Bleu Devils shot 47% from the field in the first half, while connecting on all of their free throw attempts.

In the second half, Edward Waters took control of the game early on, leading the Bleu Devils 42-34. Again, the scrappy and resilient Bleu Devils closed to Tigers lead down to three at 44-41 with a little over five minutes remaining in the game. Dillard continue to fight and claw their way through the game and with seven minutes remaining, a three point play by Lance Theard gave Bleu Devils their first lead of the game at 50-49. Dillard continued to make timely baskets down the stretch, showing excellent poise and patience. A jumper by Devonte Fernandez gave Dillard a 61-56 lead, their largest of the game and sent the gymnasium in a frenzy. The Bleu Devils connected on their free throws down the stretch and held on for the upset victory. Students stormed the court when the final buzzer sounded.

Terry Church led the Bleu Devils with 12 points and 4 rebounds. Myron McGowan contributed l1 points. Lorenzo Mitchell came off the bench late and made critical plays down the stretch to help the Bleu Devils to victory. Mitchell finished with 7 points.
