New
Orleans,
LA – The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference has announced its 2005
All-Conference team and six Xavier players, the most from any team, garnered recognition
from coaches
around the league as the some of the best in the GCAC.
Repeating as All-GCAC selections
are Gold Nuggets sophomore guard Jarryn Cleaves (
East-Memphis,
TN), and Timothy Green (Canton-MS) and
Jonathan Harper (Long Beach Poly-CA), both senior forwards for the Gold
Rush. Despite a season-ending knee
injury, senior Courtney Williams (
Ellender Memorial-Houma,
LA) received her first nod ever, for
being one of the best guards in the GCAC.
As widely expected,
freshmen Shaun Dumas (St. Augustine-New Orleans, LA) and Kojavona Hamilton
(East St. John-LaPlace, LA) were named GCAC Freshman of the Year for the men’s
and women’s teams, respectively. Dumas’
skills are evident by his first year numbers, which leads the Rush – 100 steals
(1st in GCAC, 2nd in NAIA) and 107 assists (6th
in GCAC, T60th in NAIA).
Hamilton had big shoes to fill when the
Nuggets lost Williams a month ago, but she elevated her game and went from
averaging 7.4 points per contest to 10.6 the last seven games of the regular
season.
Both Xavier teams will be
in action Wednesday afternoon in round two of the GCAC tournament. The Gold Nuggets, the number one seed, will
play No. 9 Belhaven at
2 p.m. at Fogelman Arena on the campus of
Tulane
University. The third-seeded Gold Rush will follow at
4 p.m. against No. 6 William Carey
College.
