Dustin Sahlmann is entering his second season as the head coach of the Philander Smith Lady Panther volleyball team. Both he and the Philander Smith collegiate community are excited about the upcoming season as this year is shaping out to be a New Era for PSC volleyball as we know it!

Armed with a supportive athletic and academic staff, Sahlmann hopes to meet success both on and off the court as he understands heightened community support is imperative to success. Sahlmann commented on this by stating, "I am thankful to the PSC academic/athletic community as they continued to support us last year by being in the stands even though we didn't have the most successful season. I feel that this type of continued support will help this young team be successful.  Early support on behalf of our fans will help us gain confidence and be successful during conference play."

"The New Era"

Sahlmann comes to Philander Smith after serving as a volleyball assistant with the University of Arkansas volleyball program. Soon after, he moved to Little Rock where he began coaching club volleyball for the Central Arkansas Juniors and later became the varsity high school coach at Pulaski Academy High School. During his time at P.A., Sahlmann coached multiple All-Conference and All-State athletes. Since 2007, he has served as a head volleyball coach with the Little Rock Juniors volleyball club.

Now, with the Panthers, Sahlmann is set on changing the image of the Lady Panther volleyball team as a whole. He understands that volleyball is simply a means to an end, with the final prize being a conferred undergraduate degree for his student-athletes. With this in mind, his goal is to not only coach his team towards athletic success but to also help them achieve the academic proficiency necessary to capitalize on their educational rewards. Sahlmann: "I realize that volleyball at the NAIA level is limited to a four year career. Therefore, the academic experience they will receive will serve these ladies for a lifetime. My job is to provide them with the coaching and direction necessary to help them to achieve both on the court and in life. My sole purpose is to help them to become great students and ambassadors for Philander Smith College."

This year's team consists of a conglomeration of talent as both new and old faces comprise this talented group of young women. With only four returners and one redshirt player, this team is a symbolic embodiment of the New Era mantra. The returning Lady Panthers include: Brenisha Banks, sophomore, Libero/Defensive Specialist; Tye Barnett, sophomore, Right Side Hitter.; Chelsea Fox, sophomore, Setter; Whitney McDaniel, sophomore, Outside Hitter; and Kiera Toney, senior, Outside Hitter.

Additionally, Sahlmann has added an outstanding 2012 athletic class to this year's roster. These new athletes are all well-rounded volleyball players who will definitely take PSC volleyball to new heights. When asked of his expectations for the season, Sahlmann replies, "From an athletic standpoint, I know that I have recruited a deeply talented class that Philander Smith volleyball has not seen in a long time. I have great expectations for Zyra Wright (Freshman/OH), Shaquera Crockett (Freshman/OH), Jamikhan Wilson (Freshman/MB), and Kayla Denton (Freshman/RS). I expect these young ladies to step up and excel this season. I also know that I will receive strong leadership from Kiera Toney and Chelsea Fox. Also, I don't want the crowd to sleep on Jakeira Davis as she is an out-standing player who does the little things that ultimately win games. She is a hard worker who is not super flashy but will definitely get the job done."

Sahlmann also adds Collea McKinney to the 2012 Lady Panther coaching staff. McKinney brings with her knowledge of the game from various aspects-as a collegiate player and coach. Her knowledge of the game makes her an additional asset to this New Era volleyball squad. She expects great things from the upcoming season and looks forward to gaining more knowledge under the leadership of Sahlmann. Ron'ay Coleman will also serve as team manager.

Sahlmann adamantly feels these new additions, coupled with the returners, should make this season truly exciting. He is already excited as he sees improvement in his returners from last year as well. This season is sure to be exciting to watch. The Lady Panther volleyball team will start the season with a few scrimmage sessions prior to their first game vs. Central Baptist College in Conway, Arkansas on Tuesday, August 28th. The first match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
