Volleyball - Sat, Aug. 25, 2012

Mobile, AL-The Tougaloo College Volleyball Team opened up its 2012 season with a pair of hard fought losses to Mililgan College 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-11) and the host Lady Rams 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-13).  The Lady Bulldogs opened up with a 12:30 P.M. match against Milligan College and a 2:30 P.M. meeting against the Lady Rams.

In the opening match against Milligan College, the Lady Bulldogs went into the match looking to start the season off with a win.  In set one, the Lady Bulldogs would look very impressive, taking the lead over Milligan early.  Milligan would fight back and it would become a game.  With the set tied at 24,  Milligan would score the last two points to take the set.  The Lady Bulldogs would continue to fight back, but Milligan would prove to be too much for the Lady Bulldogs, taking set two 25-20 and set three 25-11.  Milligan College out hit the Lady Bulldogs 0.282 to 0.163.

Senior Dayane Souza led the Lady Bulldogs with 8 kills, 10 digs, 2 blocks and 3 assists.  Freshpersons Marcella Oliveira of Belo Horizonte, Brazil and Briana Murphy of Texarkana, TX chipped in 5 kills apiece, with Oliveira adding 10 digs and Murphy adding 3 blocks.  Sophomore Jana Williams hit for 0.250 with 4 kills and 11 digs.  Freshperson Mariana Candelot of Uberlandia, Brazil added 3 kills, 19 assists and 2 service aces.

In the next match against the host Lady Rams, the Lady Bulldogs would try to redeem themselves with a win.  In set one, the Lady Bulldogs would give the Lady Rams a fight, but the Lady Rams would take the set 25-18.  The Lady Rams would go on to sweep the Lady Bulldogs, taking set two 25-15 and set three 25-13 to drop the Lady Bulldogs to a 0-2 start.  The Lady Rams out hit the Lady Bulldogs 0.233 to 0.039.

Dayane Souza led the Lady Bulldogs once again with 7 kills and 12 digs.  Jana Williams chipped in 4 kills and 7 digs and Marcella Oliveira added 3 kills and 14 digs.  Last season, the Lady Bulldogs opened the season with a pair of 3-0 losses to Mississippi College (25-10, 25-9, 25-8) and Millsaps College (25-11, 25-12, 25-8). Last season against the Lady Rams, the Lady Bulldogs was sweep with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-6, 25-18) loss at Tougaloo and a 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-9) loss at Mobile.

The Lady Bulldogs will be back in action on next weekend as they on back on the road at Tuscaloosa, AL for the Stillman College Tournament.  On Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs will play Concordia College Selma at 11:00 P.M. and the host Stillman College at 7:00 P.M.  On Sunday, the Lady Bulldogs will take on Miles College at 1:00 P.M.
