ORANGE BEACH, Ala. -- The no. 3-ranked University of Mobile softball team (46-10) fell 5-1 to no. 1-ranked Thomas University in the championship game of the NAIA Region XIII Softball Tournament Tuesday night at the Orange Beach Sportsplex in Orange Beach, Alabama.
With Mobile ahead 1-0, Thomas finally got things rolling in the top of the third inning by scoring four runs. With two outs and nobody on base, back-to-back errors by the Rams defense cost Mobile four runs.
After a single up the middle was misplayed by centerfield Evelyne Pare advancing the runner to second, Thomas scored their first run of the game on an error by third baseman Mayret Perez. That was followed by an RBI single to left field and two-run homer to right centerfield by Jackie Bates putting the Nighthawks ahead 4-1.
Thomas would tack on one more insurance run in the top of the seventh inning making the score 5-1
Linden Jones (18-4), who pitched all 11 innings in her team’s 7-6 win over Thomas in game one, pitched another complete game by going the entire seven innings in the second game allowing five runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out five.
Despite playing their fourth game of the day, lack of hustle wasn’t a problem as Mobile jumped out to the early lead. With runners at first and third base, the Rams pulled off a double steal to perfection as Angelica Yrigoyen swiped second base and Sylvia Bedgood scooted home on the throw to second giving Mobile a 1-0 lead.
