MOBILE, Ala. -- The University of Mobile (48-11) dropped their first game at
the 2005 NAIA national softball tournament falling 8-2 to Simon Fraser College
Saturday morning at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex in Decatur, Alabama.
With the loss, the Rams fall to 2-1 in pool play action with their final game
coming tonight at 6 p.m. against Savannah College of Art and Design. After the completion of pool play following tonight’s fourth and final contest,
the top two teams from each of the four pools will advance to Monday’s double-elimination
quarterfinal round.
The Rams scored first in the contest in the bottom of the first inning to take
a 1-0 lead. Sylvia Bedgood singled to the pitcher’s mound to lead off the game and quickly stole second base. Bedgood advanced to third base on a passed ball and scored on Evelyne Pare’s
RBI single to first base.
Mobile would maintain that lead into the top of the third inning when starting
pitcher Linden Jones ran into a bit of trouble. In that inning, the first five batters reached base for Simon Fraser before an
out was ever recorded. In all, Simon Fraser scored five in the inning on five base hits to take a 5-1
lead.
In the top of the fifth inning, Simon Fraser would put the game out of reach
by adding three more runs to take a commanding 8-1 lead. The Rams would get one run back in the bottom of the sixth inning on Mayret Perez’s
RBI double but it wouldn’t be enough as Mobile fell to 2-1 in pool play.
Jones (20-5), who picked up two victories yesterday, was credited with the loss. She went 4.1 innings, allowed eight runs (6 earned) on six hits, walked two more
batters and struck out three.
Mobile plays their final pool play game tonight against Savannah College of Art and Design at approximately 6 p.m.
