New Orleans – Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) Commissioner Steve Martin today announced the 243 student-athletes named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll for the 2016-2017 school year. All student-athletes named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or higher over two semesters.

"The primary goal of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference is to develop scholar-athletes who excel on the field, court, or track, and in the classroom," said Commissioner Steve Martin.  "The GCAC is proud of the academic accomplishments of our student-athletes, and equally congratulate the coaches, faculty members, and academic advisers who make their success a reality."

One-hundred twenty student athletes from Edward Waters College (Fla.) had GPAs of 3.0 or higher, making it the GCAC member institution with the highest number of student-athletes on the Commissioner's Honor Roll for the second year in a row. Dillard University had the second-highest number of honorees with 39, followed by Tougaloo College at 36. Xavier University at Louisiana and Talladega had a virtual tie, with 30 XULA student-athletes and 31 Talladega student-athletes being named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll. Philander Smith College (Ark.) saw 11 of their student athletes receive academic honors.
