[Volleyball] Brown drops knowledge on local kids

(LaPlace) Lady Bleu Devils head volleyball coach Yolanda Brown recently assisted with a volleyball camp at Riverside Academy in LaPlace. The camp, which was held from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., was titled "Future Stars Volleyball Camp" and was specifically for children ranging from 7th grade through 12th grade.

Hattiesburg, Miss. - The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference announced today that the winner of the 2013 Thomas Howell Cup (All-Sports Champion) is Xavier University.

The Thomas Howell Cup is awarded to the school with the highest number of points based on their order of finish in the various sports they participate in. Xavier University has now won the trophy for three consecutive years.

1. Xavier University - 46.5 points

2. Edward Waters College - 32.5 points

3. Southern University - New Orleans - 31.5 points

4. Talladega College - 24 points

5. Tougaloo College - 23.5 points

6. Dillard University - 23 points

7. Philander Smith College - 16.5 points

8. Fisk University - 9.5 points

MARION, IN – For the first time in seven years, Southern University at New Orleans has an individual national champion in track and field. Junior Sheldon Williams won the men's 400 meter hurdles with a time of 51.81, edging out Nathan Magstadt of Dickinson State by just four-hundredths of a second. The last athlete to earn an NAIA title for the Knights was current head coach Yhann Plummer, who won the 100 meters in 2006.

"It was an amazing feeling to win," said Williams. "SUNO has such an amazing tradition of All-Americans, Olympians…and for me to be a part of that as a national champion is an honor."

On the women's side, Junior Tamara Hunter earned All-America honors after an eighth place finish in the Women's 400 meter hurdles.

"I'm so proud of both Sheldon and Tamara, but also of our entire team," added Coach Plummer. "This is a great day for the University and something they will remember for the rest of their lives."

In overall team competition the men's team finished tied for 29th out of 60 teams with the women finishing tied for 53rd.

(Marion, IN) The women's 4x100 Meter Relay Team for Dillard University finished sixth in the nation during Saturday's final with a time of 47.09 in Marion, Indiana, at the 2013 NAIA Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field National Championships on the campus of Indiana Wesleyan University.

(Marion, IN) The men's 4x400 Meter Relay Team for Dillard University qualified for Saturday's final after finishing fifth in their heat with a time of 3:14.36 in Marion, Indiana, at the 62nd Annual NAIA Men's Outdoor Track & Field National Championships on the campus of Indiana Wesleyan University. The Bleu Devils were able to snatch the ninth and final spot in the final. The team is comprised of juniors Emory Nash and Matthew Jones as well as sophomores Jevonte Ezzard and Darius Neely.

New Orleans, LA - Southern University at New Orleans took a big step towards bolstering its backcourt with the addition of combo guard Melvin Davis who spent the last two seasons lighting up scoreboards for Delgado Community College.

Davis, listed at 6-0, 165 lbs, is a New Orleans native who prepped at John McDonough High School. He was named to the All-Miss-Lou Conference team this past season after averaging more than 25 points per game. For the season he had 10 games of more than 25 points including 9 games where he topped 30 points. He poured in 38 points against Pensacola-Florida, a contest in which he knocked down 9 three-pointers.

PULASKI, Tenn. – The Group Awards for the Unaffiliated Group of TranSouth Athletic and Gulf Coast Athletic Conference baseball teams have been announced. Seven of the Group's eight teams are represented with a total of 25 student-athletes honored. The TranSouth and Gulf Coast baseball coaches selected the All-Group Team, as well as recognizing the nine best defenders on the Group's Gold Glove team, by a vote in the coaches' meeting prior to the postseason tournament for the Unaffiliated Group at Martin Methodist Conference in Pulaski. The 25 honorees are now eligible for All-America and Gold Glove honors at the NAIA national level.
